Avoid Swine Flu on Holiday

We're probably all stressed by the idea of swine flu and sadly, it will affect some families' holidays. There are some things you should know before you travel, all of which are detailed on www.fco.gov.uk.

In summary:

Check whether your destination has a big outbreak of swine flu and if you decide to go, ask yourself what kind of medical care if offers, particularly if a child were to get sick.

Some countries screen for raised body temperature on arrival so if any family member has a temperature or respiratory illness, it's just not worth it; the sick person could be put in isolation while tests are carried out, or simply refused entry.

Make sure you have adequate travel insurance and check its exclusions.

Carry disinfectant gel with you and discourage children from putting their hands in their mouths (almost impossible). Make sure the whole family washes hands regularly with soap and water.

Avoid crowded places and packed public transport when travelling.

Take basic flu preparations for adults and paediatric ones for children; if anybody is struck down, stay in bed, rest and keep hydrated.
