The cost of being a 'Yummy Mummy'

The phenomenon of the 'yummy mummy' has been around for a while now but lately women are upping the stakes financially in their drive to be at the front of the trendy mother's race. Peer pressure and celebrity mothers in the media are often cited as reasons for attempting to be at the forefront of all of the latest trends for mothers.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with mothers wanting to look their best during and after pregnancy but the problem comes when they feel the need to invest huge sums of money in this aim for appearance's sake. A recent survey by the online bank Egg estimated that British mums are spending a staggering £6billion a year in trying to keep up with the 'yummy mummy' image. Having a baby is huge financial commitment anyway but the sums invested by some mums in looking at their best is incredible.
They are spending money on items ranging from the latest designer buggies and clothing for their child to botox and a personal trainer to help themselves get back in shape after pregnancy. It is a great idea to invest money in equipment for the baby that is of a high quality and offers excellent safety but this, like all things, can be done in moderation! The benefits of having the 'latest' gear for your baby are quickly put in perspective when families come into debt because of this unnecessary spending.
Ultimately, there is no reason why a mother shouldn't spoil herself and her new baby but getting into debt in the process is clearly very bad news for everyone involved and a should be avoided.
