Top Tip - Hot Food and Children

baby girl eating baby food

Can you tell me what sort of temperature the food should be that I feed my baby? I know it shouldn't be too hot but I am worried about encouraging germs if I feed her food that is lukewarm.

A baby's mouth is more sensitive to heat that ours therefore food should be given at room temperature or as you say, luke warm. To avoid encouraging the spread of bacteria heat it until it is piping hot first to kill off any germs and then allow it to cool and be sure to stir it thoroughly to get rid of any hot spots. If you still feel uncertain and prefer a visible indication of whether the food you are offering your child is the right temperature try using one of the new baby spoons that are available in most large chemists that change colour according to the heat of the food.
