Potty Training

I'm just starting this with my daughter, who is 2 years and 4 months - i did try a couple of months ago but quickly abandoned it as it soon became apparent that she hadn't a clue when she was about to wee or when she had wee'ed in her pants (she adamantly denied it despite evidence to the contrary!). The last few days I've had her in pants for a couple of hours and she has been dry, seeming to hold on until i put her into a nappy because we needed to go out. Then yesterday and today she's been in nappies part of the day and has also done a couple of wees on the potty when i've put her on it. This evening she asked for the potty after her bath and performed in it. Star stickers all round (her and her teddy). So I'm wondering what the best way forward from here is, especially when to try pants for outings/ car rides and what to do about being out and about - fold up potty in handbag (is there such a thing)/ trainer toilet seat in tow or what?. Would much appreciate hearing everyone else's experiences, dos and donts!!! Anna

Potty Training Mat

Hi Anna, you've probably got the potty training all sorted by now! If anyone else was reading this though in the same situation, there's a great prouct from JoJo Maman Bebe called a potty training mat. Its a quilted mat with vinyl underneath, it's shaped to fit a car seat or a buggy seat so that if your toddler falls asleep with no nappy on while you're out and about, it protects the seat/buggy. Doesn't help with the trousers/skirt though!

Great start

Hi Anna That is a really great start! I think you just have to go for it now. From my own experience (My daughter was exactly the same age) and from what others have said too, it is best to just leave the nappies off completely in the daytime (except to begin with at naps in the day) and leave the nappy off so as not to confuse her. She will be able to hold on for probably an hour and a half to two hours and so you are safe to take her out. She will have a few accidents to begin with but she won't like it and that should pass very quickly. I didn't really take a potty with me as I got her onto the loo very early on - and she can always do pees outside with you holding her up behind a bush somewhere! There is a really good podcast on Woman's Hour on Radio 4 that I have just listened to all about potty training. The interviewees were saying it's easier to take the nappy off so they don't hold on to go in it, they can also get constipated that way. Hope that helps. Lx
