Settling themselves to sleep

My sister in law is having difficulty in getting my neice to settle. My neice is 16 months old and needs to learn to go to sleep on her own so that she will actually stay in her cot. Mum has tried the 'settling' routine, but this ends up in 4 hours of crying where baby actually makes herself sick. The screaming also wakes up her 3 year old brother, so it ends up with two (or even three sometimes) of them crying. The whole situation is getting all of them upset, Mum and Dad and the baby. Is it just a case of persevere or has anyone got any little tips that would help?

Perseverance

hello Gill, this sounds just like my eldest.Unfortunately perseverence is the key: keep any naps before 3pm,have an evening routine(dinner, bath, story, bed)dont show that you're tired and just want them to go to bed, take them up and put them in bed and say'its bed time, lay down and i'll check on you in a minute' walk out and stand outside the door.As soon as they get out of bed walk back in and put them back in bed-no bargaining,no talking, just put them in bed and walk out again.Yep,its tiring and they will keep getting out of bed,but the message here is you're the parent, she's the child,it's bedtime and that's that.My son would cry, tantrum, ask for juice,a cuddle anything to keep us in there, and its hard at the end of the day to be patient, but an incentive to stay in bed helps-we had a bedtime cd from the early learning centre that plays bedtime stories and lullabies that really helped him lay in bed listening so he didnt kick up so much,he even started looking forward to going to bed to listen to it.Hope this helps, and it is just a stage, dont give up.
