Too young for sex

Can anyone help me? My friend's 8 year old is about to embark on the sex education module at his school and I heard that the powers that be are trying to introduce the birds and the bees to our 5 year olds soon. How can this be? I'm certainly no prude and believe that children in this day and age are inkling towards puberty and all that comes with it at an earlier age but seriously, age 5! What is the government's criteria for such an early introduction and does anyone know exactly what our future 5 year olds will be taught?

Can't it wait until 10 or 11

My son is ten and he hasn't covered sex education yet at his school. A few months ago in year 5, they watched a video with the school nurse but it covered puberty rather than sex. We managed to view the video at home first so I would know what they would be discussing first, it was basically changes to the body through puberty rather than sex but covered girls periods and why they have them. Personally I think it ridiculous to even think about discussing it with 5 year olds, shouldn't they be concentrating on learing to read? I though 8-9 a good time to discuss puberty and 10-11 a good time to discuss sex, perhaps its me being old fashioned though.
