Twins and Sleeping
Whats the best strategy to get twins to sleep through the night - in the same cot or not? in the same room or not? all thoughts very welcome

Same Cot
my sister has twins, now 4 and they've always shared a cot and then a room. i'll ask her for you! i know that there can be periods of one waking the other up but if you can get through the pain barrier of that they then tend to sleep through each others noises.

My response
sorry it's taken a while to get back you, i had a baby a few days ago! here's the response from my sister. 'I always had them in the same cot and in same room when they were too big to share the cot, so don't know how they'd have slept if it was otherwise. never saw any reason to split them up as they were so used to being around each other's noises/movement. Their bigger brother looked being with them too and they still share a room now, the three of them, four years on! Getting them to sleep was more down to feeding well, some sort of routine and enough stimulation when they were awake. We have always played music when they've gone to sleep and it still helps to settle them if we turn on the stereo when they are very lively and not ready to sleep. As for routine, Baby Wise book was perfect for first child but by twins I was reading Contented baby book and I have to say the latter is the most mind numbing book to apply to twins if you don't have a full time maternity nurse or four pairs of hands. I wanted to breast feed the twins and find a routine that would get them sleeping through the night as soon as possible so i ended up using my Baby Wise 3hr routine of feed, play, sleep, feed play sleep etc. with a few of the Contented baby ideas thrown in. Mine were two months prem so their tiny stomachs didn't hold enough milk to keep them sleeping for long for quite a while, so it is a bit of a blur as to when they actually went from 7 to 7 ish. Best for all of us was me expressing milk so mark could help at night and me finally giving up the night feed to formula so that they had more in their tummy. Where they actually slept had very little influence on getting through the night compared to the routine and full tummies. One was much more willing to go with the routine (the girl), but once the boy relinquished and 'saw the light' he became routine king and would drop off on the hour like clock work according to our routine" Hope that's of some help! all the best.
