Unassisted births

Ihave just finished reading a great book 'Call the Midwife' which is a true story of a midwife in the East End in the 1950s. When you read about the births in the years before then you realise just how lucky we are with the midwives we have now, the experience they have and the relative safety we have in giving birth. I had been so cross on watching a program on TV a few weeks ago about Unassisted Births, where the Mum-to-refused for various reasons to go into Hospital, understandable in some cases, but then they absolutely refused to have a midwife present at a home birth or any antenatal care. Yes, midwifes aren't perfect, we may not always get the ideal birth that we wanted, but as long as we have our baby at the end of it, does it really matter? When you look at births in the past we should be grateful that our midwives are here to assit us! Only when there is a disaster and a baby or Mum or both die at home in an unassisted birth will people realise the risk they are putting themselves and their baby in.
