Working Parents

Rrecent reports from YouGov found that the number of stay at home Mums is at an all-time low. Apparently 2.2 million parents stay at home compared to 2.8 million in 1993. And it is the increasing cost of living which is being blamed.
Another interesting line from the report was that one third of parents thought their children would have a better quality of life if they stayed at home. To me this figure shows that a very high percentage of parents are more than just happy with their childcare arrangements, it shows that almost seven in ten don't think life would be any better for their children if they were not working.
Perhaps the reason that childcare provision in the UK is so good has helped Mums and Dads feel confident about getting back to work. We don't always have to look on these figures as a negative.
What the report does not drill down on is how many of these working parents are doing flexible and part-time hours. Many parents have organised their lives so that working does not impact in a huge way on the family.
It is true that for many parents there is no choice. They need to return to work for financial reasons. But with choices of nannies, childminders, nurseries and help from family there are ways to successfully juggle both. Let's not be negative about working parents - whatever choice you make - staying at home or going back to work - it will not be the wrong, it will be the one that works best for you as a family.
