How to Grow... sprouting seeds for salads or treats

For those indoor activities children love why not grow some seeds as `sprouts`? The delicious young and tender shoots are rich in nutrients and because they grow so fast they are sure to keep your ‛mini-gardeners' interested.
Try growing peas, lentils, bean sprouts, mustard or cress on the sunny window ledge in the kitchen. You can use the cheapest packet of seed available and the variety of seed will not matter as they will never mature.
Use an old jam jar or any clear container, add a small amount of seed, fill with water, swish around and drain. Cover the top with a piece of kitchen cloth, seal with an elastic band and repeat the procedure at least three times a day, but as often as your children like.
