In Season August - Blueberries

Although supermarkets make these available to us all year round there really is no substitute for eating them in season - and they're cheaper at this time of year too. Their natural sweetness makes them an ideal snack for small children as does their nutritional properties as blueberries are literally bursting with goodness. So much so in fact that researchers at Tufts University analyzed 60 fruits and vegetables for their antioxidant capability and found that blueberries came out on top, rating highest in their capacity to destroy disease causing free radicals. Blueberries can be great wrinkle zappers too as the blue/red pigment they contain known as anthocyanins improves the ability of collagen to keep skin firm helping to maintain that fresh (pre-children) appearance!!
Stir fresh, sweet blueberries into yogurts or chocolate mouse, sprinkle on cereals, use as a filling in pancakes along with a little ice-cream, bake them into wholemeal muffins and add generous amounts to fresh fruit salads.
