Selecting a Nanny

Interview Forms

References are the most clear-cut way to check that your potential nanny is as good as he or she says they are. These references should be trustworthy, easy to verify. Never accept a nanny unless you are happy about what others say about them.

When it comes to selecting the right nanny there are a few areas that should definitely be looked at in detail during the selection process. It is really important that the choice is done in the most informed way possible.

Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks are also a key part of the recruitment process that must be taken into account whenever hiring somebody involved in childcare. The checks can tell you if they have any convictions and in the case of child carers, whether they have even been under investigation by the police.

Once these more formal and critical checks are made, you can concentrate on the qualifications and added bonuses that each nanny may have that will allow them to perform their job for you and your child better. Skills such as life saving and paediatric first aid that are taught by organisations such the National Childminding Association (NCMA) or by agencies like Tinies are particularly valuable to have in someone looking after your child or children. Can the nanny drive and will they expect to live in-house are also other factors to consider.

Nanny agencies can help with the selection process by verifying references, getting hold of a CRB check and checking qualifications.

There really are no short-cuts when it comes to finding the right nanny. If you go through the process yourself or use an agency, the rule is the same. If you have any doubt, don't employ.
