True, it's not essential and it is quite expensive but I think it's well worth it. My 15-month-old son sleeps like a log (but it would have been handy when he was a wrestless little thing) so I'm using it for my 2 and a-half-year-old.

She went into her own bed about six months ago after she kept jumping out of her cot. She's a terror about staying in bed but sometimes she'll just sit there and read until she goes to sleep. Without peering in her room, it's impossible to tell what she's doing. Of course, as soon as she sees me she's up again and demanding my attention but with the video monitor I can see what she's up to even when it's almost dark, the picture quality and night vision is so exceptional.
