The energy that we use in our households is responsible for about 27% of the UK's carbon emissions and accounts for almost a third of the nation's total energy consumption. So, any changes that we can make to reduce our own energy consumption are beneficial not only for the environment but also for our own finances.
Energy costs are huge, twenty-two million UK households have seen their energy bills increase since the start of 2006, according to uSwitch.com.
So what can we do to reduce these bills and help the planet?
Do not leave things on standby
A survey by a government-funded organisation found that the average household has up to 12 gadgets left on standby or charging at any one time, and that more than £740m of electricity is being wasted by things being left ticking over.
Turn down your thermostat
Turning down your heating thermostat by 1 degree can reduce your heating bill by 10%
Wash at 30 degrees
Washing normally soiled clothes at just 30 degrees uses 40% less energy than hot washes
Install wall and loft insulation
The Energy Saving Trust says that a third of the energy used to heat an un-insulated house is wasted because of heat loss through the walls. It recommends loft and wall cavity insulation as major ways to cut heat loss.
All low-income and pensioner households are entitled to free loft and cavity insulation. Everyone else can get half-price insulation. To find out more contact the Government helpline: 0800 512 012
Buy energy efficient appliances
Washing machines, freezers etc. are available with different degrees of energy efficiency. The more efficient appliances are usually a little more expensive BUT these will save you money in the long run, cutting your costly energy bills.
What else can you do to save energy in the home?
· Turn off lights when you are not using them
· Only wash full loads of washing
· Only boil the kettle with the amount of water that you need
· Dry clothes outdoors when possible - avoid tumble drying if you can
· Use energy efficient lightbulbs and rechargable batteries - they may cost more initially but you will save money in the long run
