Summer may have got off to a discouraging start but when the sun shines, it's still strong, and young children need to be protected, especially on the beach.
Here are some products which I've tried and tested on my children (and myself).
First, O-Zones, funky, UV protection suits from Australia that come as all-in-ones or tops and shorts in all manner of colours and styles. They're brilliant as you don't have to keep slapping sunblock on the exposed bits and children love them because they look like mini surf-dudes in them. They're not cheap, so if you've got boys and girls, buy neutral colours that will do as hand-me-downs!
Kidz Banz sunglasses are great; they're held on with a neoprene strap and adjusted with Velcro. They have good level protection, look cool and shouldn't fall off. Add a French Foreign Legion-style cap to protect the top of the head and back of the neck.
I also like Sun Sense Roll-in Toddler Milk, another fantastic Aussie product, Factor 50, easy to apply and completely non-sticky. I actually use it myself on my face. The only problem is, because it disappears completely, you have to remember to re-apply.
Finally, for babies and toddlers who need a midday sleep, consider investing in a UV protection cabana. Get one in breathable nylon, or they get a bit sweaty. It's a lot to lug to the beach but then, so is a sun umbrella.
